Description:
PJCDM is looking for Raft Guides to join our team for the summer. This is a great
opportunity to work in the outdoors as we launch our river rafting tours this summer
on the Wapiti River. The Summer Raft Guide will be based out of the Philip J. Currie
Dinosaur Museum in Wembley, AB, with many days spent primarily outdoors on the
river and at various fossil sites. This position will be very important for the Philip J.
Currie Dinosaur Museum by assisting it our ‘Secrets of the Wapiti’ Float program. Raft
Guide training will be supplied.
The position:
Full-time Raft Guides will work from mid-May until end of August. Days will be spent
on the Wapiti River guiding half-day trips on oar rafts. When not on the river you will
work on prepping for the rafting trips, maintaining the gear, and working on summer
camp initiatives. In addition to leading rafting trips, our Trip Leaders are also
responsible for providing positive leadership for camp guides and other staff. They
contribute to the care of our guests, coworkers, and rafting equipment. A thorough
raft guide training program will start near the end of May to prepare you for your
duties as a raft guide.
The Philip J. Currie Dinosaur museum will pay for successful candidates swift water
training, with Rescue Canada, provided employee agreements are completed and a 2
year term is agreed upon.
Responsibilities include:
• Training and providing demonstrations to guests for rafting techniques and
safety protocols
• Provide an outstanding level of service to guests and coworkers on and off the
river
• Lead daily meetings and post-trip debriefs (as needed) with supportive and
constructive feedback to team members
• Maintaining and monitoring rafting equipment for wear, demonstrate and
execute high standard of equipment care
• Lead a positive and supportive team environment
Job Requirements/Qualifications:
• First Aid, CPR, and Water Rescue certification required (we can host these paid
courses).
• PROAOA - Professional River Outfitters Association of Alberta (or equivalent)
Rafting Guide license required (we will host this training).
• Outstanding leadership experience and skills, including proven examples of
working through difficult situations with ease and composure
• Hardworking and professional demeanor, both on and off river
• Strong attention to detail as well understanding the importance of the bigger
picture
• Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
• Ability to take responsibility for the safety of the entire trip
Period of Employment
The period of employment for this position will May 13th, 2024 to August 30th, 2024.
Salary: $18-$20/hr

About the Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum
The PJCDM is located 2 km outside the Town of Wembley and approximately 33 km
from the City of Grande Prairie. While the successful candidate is responsible for
finding their own accommodation in the Grande Prairie area, the museum can suggest
some potential options. The successful candidate must be present, in-person, at the museum during work hours. They must be willing to work some evenings and weekends to accommodate volunteers and special events.
