Angeline Sweeney, second year in GPRC's Business Administration program.
GPRC’s President’s Ball is the College’s largest annual fundraising event. With collective donations over the past five years, this event has helped to raise over $480,000 directly impacting our students and their success. One of the most loved aspects of the President’s Ball is recognizing our Star Students.
Star Students are students that stand out and shine for a variety of reasons including being an academic star; an outstanding volunteer involved in the College community; or someone who has shown significant improvement or made outstanding effort during their time here at GPRC. Star Students are nominated by GPRC faculty and staff.
Although, the 2020 GPRC President’s Ball was postponed until it’s safe to all get together again, we are excited to still highlight and recognize 8 incredible students virtually.
Thank you to our community for your valued support and ongoing commitment to our College.
Meet Angeline Sweeney.
Angeline is a second year in GPRC’s Business Administration program. GPRC Communications and Marketing got to virtually meet with Angeline and ask a few questions on what it meant to her to be recognized by her instructors as a Star Student.
Check it out.
What does it mean to you to be chosen as a Star Student and recognized for your hard work?
It has been many years since I’ve attended post-secondary school and I was nervous about returning. I have found the learning challenging but enjoyable; connected with a great group of people, and had a very successful first year. I am so honoured that my hard work was recognized, and I was selected to be a Star Student.
Why did you choose to come to GPRC? What have been some highlights of your academic career so far?
GPRC is local and offers such a wide range of programs. I appreciated that the Business Administration department offers a one-year certificate, two-year diploma, and even an undergraduate degree in collaboration with SAIT. Highlights include realizing that I am still an effective learner and that my life experience can actually be an advantage to my learning. My success during the first year has reinforced that I’ve chosen the correct program.
What are your future goals after you finish your program at GPRC?
I plan on finding employment in the accounting field.
What are you up to when you’re not studying or in class?
When I’m not busy with school, I enjoy spending time with my family, snuggling my dogs and cat, reading, and baking.
We want to know some of your favourites. Favourite class so far at GPRC? Favourite study snack? Favourite study spot?
My favourite classes so far were Introductory Accounting and Business Math. My favourite study snacks are fish crackers and anything chocolate, and my favourite study spot is either in the library or on the couch with my cozy blanket.
This has been an unprecedented year with the COVID-19 pandemic. How have you adapted to the new learning landscape? What have been some helpful or useful tips you have learned throughout this experience?
My family had previously homeschooled, so we all have our own devices, workspace and self-motivated study habits which made the transition to online easier. It has been helpful staying connected to my group of friends through ZOOM and chat groups, either for study help or just to visit.
What advice would you give to a fellow student to motivate them in their studies?
If at all possible, read the material ahead of time so it is familiar, do all the suggested practice work and assignments, and don’t get behind - it’s so much more difficult to catch up. Take regular breaks from studying and stay connected with the outside world.
Congratulations Angeline on being chosen as a 2020 Star Student. We can’t wait to see what you achieve next.
